The Art

Ju-Jitsu or Jiu-Jitsu is the name given to a style of Japanese Martial art. The word "Ju-Jitsu" translates in English as "Gentle art".

It is a style of martial art that focuses on unarmed combat. A Student Proficient in the art studies a combination of techniques such as punches, kicks, blocks, throws, joint locks and other simillar techniques.

According to Japanese Mythology, Ju-Jitsu dates back some 2000+ years. Over the course of Japanese history the art was primarily used by the Samurai. Earlier styles concentrated in armed combat. After the passing of Tokugawa Leyasu (late 19th century), there were few battles in Japan as it was unlawful for non-Samurai citizens to carry weapons. As a result the Samurai adapted the art to allow for unarmed combat.

Today, Ju-Jitsu has grown considerably over the last 50 years with Clubs training all over the world.
